Richland Library Wheatley
Women's History Talk
Thursday, March 28, 2024 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.
In the early 1900s, Celia D. Saxon and several other Columbia Black women founded the Phyllis Wheatley Young Women's Christian Association (Y.W.C.A.). Located at 1429 Park Street, the Phyllis Wheatley Y.W.C.A. had a mission to support local Black girls and women in the area. In a presentation, Historic Columbia's Community Engagement Coordinator, JoCora Moore, will join Richland Library Wheatley to discuss a brief history of the Phyllis Wheatley Y.W.C.A., including a spotlight on the Black women involved in the organization. The presentation is part of a larger project titled "Becoming One: The Young Women's Christian Association in Columbia, South Carolina," which explores the integration of the Central and Phyllis Wheatley branches in Columbia in the 1970s.
