Local History

Richland Library has a large collection of historic materials and genealogy records for the state of South Carolina with a concentration on the Midlands. We also have access to national news and obituary resources, because genealogy research doesn’t always stay within state lines!

In the Library

Walker Local and Family History Center

The expert librarians in the Walker Local History Room, located in the Main Library, offer personal concierge service for customers interested in genealogy, history or city records. We help customers around the world research their family history and local historic people, places and events. Our expert librarians are available to guide your research during regular library hours.

Walker Local History accepts donations of local historical significance. Donated materials might include: yearbooks, books, family histories, mpas, funeral programs or local photographs. If accepted these materials are added to the collection and are available for in-house genealogical and historical research.  If you have materials that you’d like to donate, please contact the Walker Local and Family History Center for more information or visit our online uploading form to share your materials.

Online Resources

Many resources can be accessed online with your library card and pin number—usually the last four digits of your phone number. Click on the links to the right for more detailed information.

I come to the Walker History room monthly to attend the lectures. I have found them to be informative and very interesting and have learned a lot about my adopted state. Thanks to the enthusiasm of Debbie Bloom and Ann my visits are very enjoyable. So glad the library has this special room for those of us who have a passion for history and our ancestors. - Happy Customer
